Who Can Donate Plasma?

Do I qualify to become a plasma donor?

For most healthy individuals, donating plasma is an option. But there are still a few things we need to verify to determine your eligibility for the plasma donation process.

Let’s start with the easy stuff.

In order to donate, you must be…

As a part of Takeda, BioLife values all donors and does not discriminate based on any characteristic protected by Federal, state or local law. This includes race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and veteran status. All BioLife donor eligibility criteria must be met to protect the donor’s health and product safety.

*Donors who are +66 years old at the time of their physical exam must provide a letter from their healthcare professional.

**Your health is determined at your medical screening.

What is a medical screening and why do I need it?

To fully assess your eligibility, our medical team will review your medical history. This is followed by a physical examination and a blood test. Repeat donors must have these examinations at least once a year. All information discussed in your screening is confidential.

Let’s recap the 3 steps of your screening:

Medical History Interview: We'll privately ask questions about your past and present health history. This includes questions about possible exposure to certain infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.

After you’re approved to donate plasma, you’ll undergo a “mini” screening before each donation going forward.

This will consist of:
Health Assessment

Completion of an electronic questionnaire

Vital Signs Check

Your current weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature

Blood Analysis

A small blood sample from your finger to test for anemia (hematocrit) and your protein level

What do I need to bring the day of my appointment to donate plasma?

There are two important things you need to bring:

Valid identification and proof of a permanent local address. Your valid identification does not need to contain all four required items, and you can bring two or more documents that include these four items with you.

I’m ready to become a donor

You’ve made a great choice. Let’s get you started.
Proof of a permanent local address

This address must be within the donor recruitment area of the center where you would like to donate (within 40 miles). If you live more than 40 miles away from your donation center, please contact us prior to your appointment.

Your identification documents can serve as proof of your current address. A signed lease with your current landlord, a utility bill, or other item mailed through the United States Postal Service (USPS) and postmarked within the last two months is also acceptable.

Electronic proof of address, such as the image of a utility bill, following the same guidelines as above is acceptable. Some exceptions may apply to the donor recruitment area for college students and military personnel. Need more information? Contact your nearest center.
