Life gets busy. Between errands, family, and everything else you have on your plate, it isn’t always easy to find time to give back. The good news? Donating plasma doesn’t take long, plus it helps create lifesaving treatments for people who need them.
Below, we break down what happens at a typical donation appointment and show you just how simple the whole process is—start to finish. Once you experience our commitment to donor safety and meet our friendly staff, we bet you’re going to want to tell your friends about us!
Your first plasma donation appointment will likely take about 2 hours. Once you get into a routine, future visits should go faster (usually around 1 hour).
Here’s what happens at each step:
Step 1: Check-in (10-15 minutes)
Try to arrive 10 minutes before your first appointment to help us kick things off on time. We’ll ask for some basic information, and we’ll check your ID. Before you get here, you can visit our Who Can Donate page for a list of what to bring with you.
Step 2: Medical screening (30 minutes)
Next, we’ll make sure you're good to donate with a health check, which includes questions about your medical history, a physical exam, and a quick finger poke.
Step 3: Donation (45-60 minutes)
Now you’re off to relax. Kick your feet up in one of our beds while our technicians take care of everything. Curious about how it all works? The donation machine will collect some of your blood and separate out the plasma (the liquid part). Then, it returns the remaining blood cells and platelets back to you. Your technician will be nearby to keep an eye on things and to make sure you’re comfortable. Donors often tell us the process is easy and pain-free.
Step 4: Check-out (10-15 minutes)
After donating, you’ll have time to chill out for a few minutes. Then you’ll meet with our staff to check out and schedule your next donation. It’s that easy!
Your first donation is the start of making a real difference. But how does your first donation differ from your second (or even fifth) donation? We’ve got all the details!
Your First Check-In
At your first appointment, we’ll make sure you’re eligible to donate. We ask that you bring:
We’ll need the real deal, so please don’t bring copies or photos of documents.
Future Check-Ins
When you come back to see us, you'll have the option to check in with a biometric scan. That makes future check-ins even faster and easier! If you opt out of biometric scans, we'll just need to see your photo ID again.
Your First Screening
Your safety comes first, so your first visit will include a medical screening before you donate. This will include:
Future Screenings
Repeat donors can expect a full medical screening at least once a year. At every other visit, you’ll breeze through a shorter “mini” screening that will include:
The BioLife Debit Card
Before you wrap up your first visit, you’ll get a BioLife Debit card so you can be compensated for your time. It’s super easy to access the money you receive. Some more great news:
Future Compensation
The next time you donate, we’ll automatically load your compensation on your BioLife Debit Card within 24 hours. You can also take advantage of our donor loyalty program and our Buddy Bonus referral program. Both give you ways to earn even more for your time. The centers’ promotions can vary, so please make sure to check your center’s up-to-date offers.
Donation Times
Every donor is different, so your donation time can vary a bit. It mostly depends on how much plasma your body can give. After a couple of visits, you’ll get a feel for what’s normal for you.

As much as we love having our donors in the center, we do everything we can to be respectful of your busy schedule by making the donation process as quick as possible. There are a few ways that you can also help make the process quick:
You can also help make sure your body’s ready to donate by eating well and hydrating before your donation. Some quick tips are to grab something that’s got some protein but doesn't have too much salt or fat. When it comes to picking the right drink, think: water or juice and skip caffeinated or alcoholic drinks.
Many donors really enjoy the peace and quiet they find while they’re donating. We often see them pass the time by streaming their favorite shows or texting with friends or family. Here are some of the ways our regulars make the most of their time:
“I like to text my family.” – Vanessa
“I like to watch videos on YouTube, and there are a few podcasts I like—eBooks as well.” – Celina
“While I donate, I like to read books, such as suspense thrillers.” – Brian
“I do training videos for work on my phone.” – Kyle
“I like to watch shows on my tablet.” – Sue
With just a couple hours of your time, you can have an incredible impact on someone’s life. Isn’t that amazing? The bonus is you get paid for your time! Why? Because we know just how valuable your time is—a true win-win.
